AS many as 65 anglers will converge on Port Denarau Marina for the two-day Fiji Islands Tuna Classic Fishing Tournament on Friday.
Competition official Jared Wood said top local angler Leith Wilson fishing from the Royal Suva Yacht Club would boost the Suva team against the best in the West and from around the globe.
He said Wilson would be tested against Scotty O’Connor of the Namotu Team.
“Organisers of the event expect to attract at least 14 vessels from around Fiji with some 65 local and international anglers participating in this exciting sport,” he said.
“The majority of anglers no doubt will be focusing their efforts on targeting yellowfin tuna for maximum points.
“With over $7000.00 worth of prizes and various trophies up for grabs, the event promises to be highly competitive and exciting one.”
Boats will depart Denarau Marina daily and return by 5pm each evening for the daily weigh-in spectacle.
“Here the day’s catches are weighed and points awarded to participating anglers.
“The event is organised by the Denarau Game and Sports Fishing Club, and offers offshore sport fishers a chance to experience the rush of screaming reels and bent rods.
“Spectators are welcome to come down and witness some of the surrounding oceans bigger catches being weighed each afternoon.”
